's the goal of the test? >> the test was an assessment of how much our students know about our u.s. history at grades 4, 8, and 12. everything from the united states constitution to presidents to why certain laws came into play. at very different levels, there are certain questions that are asked. the 8th graders really were the ones who did, i would say, perform the best when we consider the 4th and we consider the 12th grade. >> that's because 8th graders' scores improved over the last time the test was given. 4th graders and 12th graders did not. in fact, a majority of 12th graders turned in a poor performance. their questions were harder, and their correct answers were fewer. 55% of 12th graders scored below the basic level. what does this show? >> mm, lauren, that's not good news at all. . there is a lot of confusion about the shooter. what can we report? >> what we're being told now by u.s. officials is that the shooter is 20-year-old adam lanza. there was confusion earlier because he may have been carrying his elder brother, ryan lanza's i.d., his elder brother is 24. he's in custody. he's helping the f.b.i. with their questions, apparently being very cooperative. not a suspect in any way. but the shooter, we're told, this 20-year-old adam lanza. according to rick leventhal, who has been leading much of the reporting today on this, adam lanza woke thumb morning at his mother's home, shot her in the face and then came to this school. imagine the scene right now in sandy hook elementary. though the bodies of the children, many of them still there, we are told, and the difficulties are caught in identifying it, the only way because these kids obviously don't carry i.d., is for the parents to actually identify the bodies themselves. governor malloy talked about that difficult process earlier today. listen. >> our police personnel and others are doing the utmost to clear th

. yesterday it was like these things next to each other. 20 children in china stabbed. 20 children in the u.s. shot and killed. of the 20 children in china who were stabbed, no fatalities. so it is not the end of viole e violence, and you can't walk around and end violence, but a common sense gun law that addresses the issues of the automatic weapons. i wanted to show quickly the president in the second presidential debate in town hall meeting was asked about gun control and he did say at this moment that he was thinking about the automatic weapons ban. take a quick listen. oh, sorry, maybe we don't have that at this point, but what he said is that what i'm trying to do is to get a broader conversation of how to reduce the violence generally and part of it is to get an assault ban row int introduced. ari, this seems where we could come together, an assault weapon s ban. >> well, it has declined with a ten-year sunset provision, and why a sunset provision? because things that are hard to get through congress regardless of which issue often are negotiated that way. that is why the bush p tax c

, a little bit at the margins when we're talking about the size that we have, in the u.s., compared to the next country which is almost double, right? if we're really serious about the gun violence in this country, we need something much bigger and more comprehensive than the kinds of relatively small bits of legislation that's being advocating. >> so you're really describing the public health approach to gun violence which say very important part of our discussion. if you look at the suicide part of it, most people who have been depressed seem help other ways. there's points of entry, sometimes, in hospitals and public hospitals. so you can put a program in eye ahospital that would, if they see a man who is coming it in who just lost this job. and the people who kill themselves are in a very are specific age category group. they are young males between the ages of 15 and 20. and they're older males between the ages of 55 and 65. so you can set up a protocol, where people discussed with them and said, do you have guns in your home? which is what the pediatricians are trying to do. >
